Nylon vs. polyester: what's the difference?

Tuesday, December 7, 2021 2:30 PM

Nylon carpet has been a mainstay of carpet flooring for decades. It’s a durable fiber that resists crushing. Polyester came along about 20 years after nylon. When it came in the 1960s, customers noticed how similar it was to the appearance and feel of wool. Both fibers can be found at Willow Creek Flooring. We are a carpet store with you in mind.

Nylon

Nylon is known as a fiber of choice for most homeowners, over 60%! Its resilience helps it bounce back from being compressed. So, if you have heavy furniture or heavy electronics on your nylon, there will be no indentations or matted down places in the carpet when you remove them. Nylon is also non-abrasive and durable, so it is appropriate for heavy traffic in the home. Nylon can be more costly than other synthetic fibers, but its performance makes up for the value and price.

Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic carpet fiber that has a natural softness to it. It also comes in a wide range of vibrant colors. It dyes well, but it is also inherently stain-resistant. Spills do not penetrate the fibers. Polyester is great for low-traffic areas, like bedrooms. It also resists fading, so it is appropriate for sunlit rooms. Polyester is made from recycled plastic bottles, so its production value is lower than nylon. This also makes it an eco-friendly carpet.
